Frequently Asked Questions

General

Why should I book my child for a developmental checkup?

The developmental check up provides a great opportunity to see what your child is able to do at this time in his or her development. It also provides an opportunity to find out information about activities that you can do to continue to support his/her development over the next couple of years. Parents can receive valuable information about programs and resources available in their community.

When should your child have a developmental checkup?

You should complete a developmental checkup at 6 months, 18 months and once between your child’s 2nd and 3rd birthday.

What can I expect at the developmental checkup?

You will be asked to complete a short questionnaire called the Ages and Stages Questionnaire.  It asks questions about how your child is starting to use and understand words, how the are moving around and how they are getting along with others to name a few areas covered.  This link provides an example of one of the questionnaires.

Where will the developmental checkup take place?

The developmental checkup for children 6 and 18 months-of-age will take place at you local community health site. These are completed as part of the 6 and 18 month well child clinic visit. To find out where you can take part in a developmental checkup for an older child please see the What’s New area of this website or contact Community Links:

Why read to my child?

Early experiences with books, songs and nursery rhymes help your child's developing brain understand the structure and use of language.  Talking to your child alot (as you would do while reading) helps them to find patterns in sounds they hear and it helps them to learn some valuable skills that they can use in school.
